Problem Solving: One Step at a Time

This week, the strategy I used to help me out was the “One Step at a Time” problem solving strategy; and I used it successfully in two very different ways.  The first way I used it was specifically for HST 231 to outline the individual steps I would need to take to write a research paper due the next morning in class that I had started but was far from finishing.  Using the strategy like this helped me to write the paper with a calm mind and enabled me to not just finish it, but to write it with clarity and stay focused on what was expected of the assignment and how it was going to be graded.  My reasoning for using this strategy in this way was because it clearly showed me what I needed to do and in what order, reminded myself what would happen if I failed to finish it, and made it clear that I had to get it done.
The other way I am using it is by applying the strategy collectively for REL 205, CLS 105, and IST 195 to keep myself guided and on track over the course of twelve days to finish work that will be due in sixteen days.  The reason I am working so far out in the future is because my girlfriend from back home is coming out to visit and will be staying with me for four days.  The thinking is that the less work I have to do for the week following her visit, the more time I can spend with her; and using the “One Step at a Time” strategy functions as a reminder for why I should spend the extra effort to work overtime.  A second function of using the strategy like this is that it lists the different steps I need to take in order to successfully meet my goal.  Another bonus for using the strategy this way is that it plays to the fundamentals of my work ethic: minimizing stress levels.

20 minutes strategies

hello everyone,

this is hanqi. I have already posted my blog. This time I am using 20 minutes strategies. the reasons I chose this strategies are as followings.

1. I can learn a lot of definitions and concepts from this strategies.

2. When I review for the courses, I can use those hand out to prepare my exams.

3. It is efficient. My time is saved from this course. I only need 20 minutes to do a lot work done.

I prepare the questions before the class. And during the two lectures, I took a lot of notes. There are some important definitions and concepts, which are incredible important. after the lecture, i finished the questions I wrote in the lectures. This tech helps me reinforce my knowledge.

I applied this tech to my two different classes. One is linguistic class, the other one is physiology.

in my psychology class, we have a lot of concepts, which are really unfamiliar and confusing. Those terms are very academic. We need to familiarize those terms first, then try to memorize those terms accurately for our exams.

in my linguistic class, there are also a lot of materials we need to understand and know. I will give you people some examples. What is Broca aphasia? What is Wericke’s aphasia? Those two terms I never heard before. They are very academic. When I use 20 minutes technique, I took notes in the class. Even though I am not familiar with those kinds of terms, I wrote them. After class, I still have chance to review them. In addition, those paper sheets can be used as index card before the exams. They are very handy.

I also took two pictures as my documentaries. Those two documentaries are 20 minutes technique. I upload them for you folks to look at.

I hope my blog is helpful, and I am glad I can share some learning experience with you group members.

You guys have good one.

Jeopardy Notes + 20 min Test Prep

This past week I combine two of the learning strategies introduced to us in class/ the reading. The two I combined are the jeopardy style note-taking and the 20 minute test prep strategies. I then applied these two strategies in two of my classes. The two classes I chose for the week were this (CLS) class and my transmedia colloquium. Even though we do not have exams in this class I thought it would be useful anyway because I would make sure I understood the material presented in class and not just blindly take notes. So during both these classes I folded my notebook paper in half; on the left side I took down the notes during class, and on the right side I created a series of questions corresponding to the notes previously taken on the right. After I had completed writing my questions, I quizzed myself using the the jeopardy style notes. In total this took me around exactly 20 minutes per class.

These are my notes from my CLS class (Wed.)

And from my Colloquium (Tues.)
*I did not initially implement the jeopardy notes in my tuesday colloquium but I went back and re-wrote them in this style and then went through and did the twenty minute test prep. So I guess on the whole my colloquium took over twenty minutes of time after class, but the studying/ question making portion took about only twenty minutes.*

time manegement------jeopardy note-taking

This is my first CLS105 blogger here I hope everyone who choose the blogger can enjoy yourself through the assignment. Before I started my college I never had a specific way to study because I think depending on different class I should use different way to study. However, when I began my new life here I found it is too hard to decided which way should I use in all different classes.

We all know that note-taking is very important tool to review the courses but my biggest problem is when I reviewed the notebook after the class sometimes I am so confused how it is related to the course.so I tried the jeopardy note-taking in HOM165 and IST195 his week and I found that is really useful to understand the course.

To be honest, I think understanding of music is the most diffcult class for me because it is not only about the music but history and some religions things. Before this week after the class I was so fruseteed about ths course because there too many things you need to remeber. However, this week when I tried to use the jeopardy note-taking I found after class when I review the class and at the same time try to recall what is about I totally understand what the professor trying to illustrate.

The other course I used the strategies is information studies,it is a course based on the theory but you should always analyze how the information chenged our life. In our first semester, the foudation is very important so make a good note on the class is siginificant. This week we learned hard wareAfter I used this note-taking strategy I found I can easily distinguish the function of  each component of the computer.

Another advantages of this strategy is when we review the course before the exam we can utilize the quesion we built when we make our notes. Further advantage of this way of making note is we can save time whem we reviewed the knowledge. So it is a good way of note-taking can help you to learn the knowledge better and make your work more effiency.

Fritter Finder

This week, the strategy I used to help me with my classes (IST195, CLS105, REL205, WRT105, HST231) and workload was the Fritter Finder.  Or rather, a variation of this tool since I found that I couldn't fit enough information into the Fritter Finder and still easily make sense of it.  I also didn't like the way it works because it was too difficult to edit the information on it if I needed to after I created it.  So instead of using the online time management resource, I used the iCalendar application on my laptop to do the same thing in a fashion that better suited me.
iCalendar allows for easy display of events
The great thing about the iCalendar application is that it allows you to not only input whatever you want into whatever time, but it lets you input as much information as you need and enough ways to remind yourself about the events and things you need to remember to take care of.
iCalendar has full customization options
It is really a great tool for anybody that needs that little bit of extra help to keep him or herself on track.  The only drawback to the iCalendar is that, while it is available on every Macintosh Operating System, it is not available to Windows users.
